The Rise is an award-winning example of a shared facility in Perth. The City of Bayswater committed to redeveloping the outdated Alma Venville Centre and providing state-of-the-art community facilities. The name, The Rise, is an acronym for Recreation, Information, Socialising and Entertainment, reflecting the wide range of facilities and services. A library, child health clinic, amphitheatre, function room, community centre, gym, kiosk and community offices are part of the centre.

A healthy mixed-use facility

The Rise is a landmark building for the City of Bayswater and community. It reflects the user needs of both the community and the City’s administration. The spaces have been designed to accommodate a range of activities from administration and sport, to community gatherings. The City has actively encouraged other agencies to use The Rise thereby providing a greater range of services.

The Rise includes facilities that allow the community to engage in structured physical activity

The design of the building was important. A number of design features have made The Rise a successful award-winning shared facility. Strong architectural features that identify the building as a civic building contribute to a high level of recognition. The four towers provide visual cues and architectural elements to enhance the amenity of the Maylands Town Centre.

The Rise offers gym facilities, which support engagement in physical activity

The building supports the community values and contributes to the vibrancy of Maylands and the surrounding area. It is also a link to the commercial and economic activities of the Maylands Town Centre.

The Rise is a strong social, cultural, recreational and civic hub, designed to meet the needs of the community.

The building:

Embodies versatile design ensuring that the spaces are multi-purpose areas
Complements the historic architecture within the precinct, while providing contemporary functional design
Includes green building initiatives
Provides an internal staircase and balconies to encourage physical movement
Addresses the street with formal gardens and an amphitheatre, and
Facilitates pedestrian and vehicle access to the main street.

- The Alma Venville Sports Arena, within The Rise development, is a 1910 square metre sports facility, which boasts two multi-sport courts, for basketball, netball, indoor soccer, volleyball, badminton and floorball. The community is able to use the courts on a casual basis when they are not being utilised for organised competitions.
- The Rise contains a child health clinic and nurse on-site, which is managed by the Department of Health.
- The Rise gym is a 275 square metre facility with modern physical training equipment. There are toilets, showers and change rooms and views of the Alma Venville Sports Arena.
- There are over 20 group fitness classes running weekly. Classes include Body Combat, Body Pump, Yoga, Step, Stretch ‘n’ Flex, Konga and Body Blitz. There are also a range of specific programs targeted at children and teenagers, including a number of social sporting clubs such as netball, basketball, soccer and volleyball.

- The City demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability by incorporating an additional $700,000 of environmentally sustainable design elements into The Rise.
- The Rise includes a number of energy efficiency initiatives: energy efficient lighting, motion sensor lighting and an energy management system.
- The Rise is located in an area that has traditionally been a focus for community, recreation and civic activity in Maylands. The Maylands Hall, located on the corner of Guildford Road and Eighth Avenue, built in the 1920s, continues to be the heart of civic endeavour.
- The Alma Venville Centre was dedicated to Georgiana Alma Venville, who served as a City of Stirling Councillor representing the Maylands Ward for 18 years. She was also Mayor from 1975 to 1976, Deputy Mayor in 1977, and Secretary of the Maylands Ratepayers Association from 1970 to 1989. The Rise replaces the Alma Venville Centre to address the changing needs of the community whilst continuing to preserve the area as a centre for the community.
- The Rise caters for a number of different uses; the library at The Rise has Baby Rhyme time and Story Time sessions as well as a diverse range of books.
- The Rise also contains the one-stop shop where residents can make council rate payments, Home and Community Care payments, infringements, bonds and dog registrations.
- There are eight community spaces, four of which have access to kitchen facilities. These rooms are for ongoing use by community ‘not-for-profit’ organisations and local community groups and clubs.
- The Rise supports families by providing a crèche service for children aged between 1 and 5 years.
- Corporate meetings, training sessions, conferences, weddings, formal dinners and awards nights are held in The Rise function centre overlooking the Swan River. The function centre has a commercial kitchen, bar and internal lift for disabled access.
- The Rise contains a Community Hall area of 150 square metres, which can be divided into three smaller areas to address a range of user needs.
